HomeAdvisor's model takes a single enquiry and distributes it to several contractors who have paid for leads in your area. They then race to reach you first. Five calls in an afternoon is not the model failing — it is the model working exactly as designed.

Thumbtack charges pros for the leads and quotes they actually engage with, rather than reselling one shared phone number to everyone in the postcode. You typically browse profiles, review history and often an indicative price before anyone contacts you.

The consequence shows up precisely where you would expect: materially fewer spam-call complaints against Thumbtack, and pro-side complaints that concentrate on lead cost rather than on consumer harm.

In January 2023 the FTC announced an order requiring HomeAdvisor to pay up to $7.2 million and to stop deceptively marketing its leads. The final order was entered in April 2023, with more than $3 million refunded by November 2023.

Read the substance carefully, because it is routinely misreported: that action concerned harm to contractors, not homeowners. The allegation was that HomeAdvisor misled the pros buying leads about lead quality and cost. It was not a finding about homeowner safety or about the quality of the pest companies in the network.

Thumbtack has no FTC enforcement action on record.

Both facts matter, and neither is the whole picture. The homeowner-side complaint about HomeAdvisor is the contact blitz, which is a different and softer problem than the FTC case.

Reach. In rural and semi-rural ZIPs where national brands have no branch and Thumbtack's pest category is thin, HomeAdvisor will surface local operators you would otherwise find only by asking a neighbour. If you have submitted a Thumbtack request and got one lukewarm response, HomeAdvisor is the sensible second move.
